Absolutely awsome. That’s about all you can say about this flabbergasting set put out by Columbia in the early 90?s. The five stars above reflect the love and care that went into every aspect of this set, from the presentation with it’s frosted portrait of Sinatra on the cover, to the different CD sleeves and labels which really give a sense of history to the set – to the music itself, which is priceless. Although the price is awesome – a whopping $250, but in my estimation, it’s worth every penny. This is pop music history in the making, with Sinatra acting as pop music’s custodian, and the culmination of every songwriter’s dream. During his Columbia period, Sinatra chose and recorded masterworks of all the great songwriters of the era, from Rodgers & Hammerstein to Jimmy Mercer; from stage, screen and anywhere else he heard a great tune. Sinatra had great taste in music – and until his audience unaccountably began to shrink, he took great care in the songs he chose. Oh, make no mistake – there are some true stinkers here as well: novelty numbers that he tried when it seemed he could catch an audience’s ear no other way – I mean, you’ve got to hear the reprehensible “Mama Will Bark” to believe it – but the vast majority of music here is pure American gold – the finest songs by the finest songwriters, arranged and recorded with all the love and care that Columbia could muster. This ain’t just a box set, it’s pure music – period.

The documentary In the Mirror of Maya Deren (Im Spiegel der Maya Deren, 2002) is a film about avant garde filmmaker Maya Deren (1917-1961) by Austrian film maker Martina Kudlacek. It is based on the biography The Legend of Maya Deren. The soundtrack to this documentary was made by the avant-garde composer John Zorn.

The Guadalcanal Campaign, also known as the Battle of Guadalcanal and codenamed Operation Watchtower by Allied forces, was fought between August 7, 1942 and February 9, 1943 on and around the island of Guadalcanal in the Pacific theatre of World War II. It was part of the allied strategic plan to protect the convoy routes between the US, Australia and New Zealand. Launched a few months after the Kokoda Track campaign, it was the second major offensive by Allied forces against the Empire of Japan.

The Siege of Leningrad, also known as the Leningrad Blockade (Russian: aeieaaa Eaieia?aaa, transliteration: blokada Leningrada) was a prolonged military operation by the German Army Group North and the Finnish Defence Forces to capture Leningrad in the Eastern Front theatre. It started on 8 September 1941, when the last land connection to the city was severed. Although the Soviets managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city on 18 January 1943, the total lifting took place on 27 January 1944, 872 days after it began. It was one of the longest and most destructive sieges in history and the most costly in terms of casualties.

This superb compilation of Snader Telescriptions demonstrates to perfection the two sides of Nat “King” Cole - the smooth, velvey- voiced crooner and the creative, influential jazz pianist. In his trio or quartet, these two aspects were usually combined to stunning effect. These three-minute performances, made as fillers for TV, were the forerunners of videos, but unlike the modern version these are actual filmed performances:What you hear is what you also see.
Cole (1917-1965) clearly regarded them as invaluable promotional aids for his recordings, as most of the 15 featured tunes, including several of his big hits, had been recorded for Capitol by the Cole combo between 1943 and 1950. According to jazz movie historian David Meeker, the majority of these short flicks were produced in 1951 when Nat had become perhaps the number one black entertainer of the post-war era.
The pianist’s trail-blazing trio was expanded to quartet size in 1949 with the addition of conga drummer Jack Costanzo, and this is the group which figures as an entity on nine numbers. On two (“For Sentimental Reasons” and “ You Call It Madness”) Nat reverts to his original trio format, while for six ballad interpretations the quartet is joined by a lush Hollywood string section.

Costanzo’s palms are put to good use on the Cole solo vocal vehicle,“Calypso Blues”, a paean to the Trinidadian lifestyle. It’s interesting that there are versions of “Home” and “Nature Boy” by both the quartet and the expanded ensemble, whereas “Sweet Lorraine” is offered in two takes, both by the quartet. Even more remarkable is the fact that two of these shorts with strings (“Always You” and “Nature Boy”) are offered here in colour, having survived the changes of ownership of the Snader company. As for Nat Cole’s voice, it has charmed generations of listeners with the unique qualities which are on show here. Irrespective of whether he was giving a hip treatment to a jump tune like “Route 66” or caressing a commercial concoction such as “Mona Lisa”, Nat always delivered a flawless interpretation.
